Sports Drinks – Who needs them anyway?

Some parents worry about the levels of sugar in salt in the sports drinks that their children consume. To keep concerns in perspective, compare the sodium and carbohydrate (sugar) content of common foods with that of a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink, such as Gatorade (Table 1). There is no question that there is too much sugar and sodium in our diets, predominantly from processed and packaged foods, however, sports drinks are a negligible source of these nutrients. Sports drinks may in fact play a very important role in the success and safety of your young athletes.
