Are You Keeping An Eye On Your Keepers?

By Brenda Abdilla

One of the reasons recruitment is so difficult in a tough economy is that even unhappy employees tend to stay put and wait until the timing is safer for career exploration. Many companies have already laid off their under-performers and any surplus staff to retain those people who are “keepers” in the organization. Keepers are that rare breed of employee who keep on performing while simultaneously helping their organizations adapt to nearly-impossible circumstances all while maintaining their own job responsibilities.

Depending on how hard your organization has been hit, you may be vulnerable to unexpected turnover as we come out of the recession. Chances are your keepers are savvy business people. If the abuse of the market and internal conditions have been fairly severe, it is likely that they will entertain better offers as money begins to flow back into the pockets of employers.

Human resource experts remind us that competitive salaries, benefits, educational reimbursements and flexible schedule options are still the best ways to retain valuable employees. Of course, job fit and quality management make a huge impact as well. When we all begin to breathe that big sigh of relief, don’t forget to sit down and chat with your keepers!
