MISSISSAUGA, ON – Mississauga will launch a new fee assistance program called “Active Assist” on May 4, 2009, to enable residents living in low-income households to register and participate in structured, quality recreation activities.
Active Assist provides eligible low-income households a fee credit of $275 per person, per year, deposited into their Recreation and Parks program account. The credit can be applied to activities such as swimming, skating, fitness and summer camps. Says Director of Recreation and Parks John Lohuis, |

Eligibility for the Active Assist program is based on economic need – individuals and families whose financial circumstances make them unable to pay for recreation programs and services offered by the City – and Low-Income Cut Offs (LICO) established by Statistics Canada. In its first year, the program is being offered to 2,500 residents. If demand exceeds that number, families will be issued a 12-month swim and skate pass.
