New Gyms Appearing in Indonesia
JAKARTA – Thanks partly to an increasing focus on healthier living and partly to the economy, fitness clubs are popping up all over Jakarta.
Celebrity Fitness has nine clubs throughout the city, having increased its membership from 4,500, when it first opened five years ago, to 50,000 today.
Fitness First, which opened in 2005, has seven clubs with 28,000 members. Gold’s Gym now has four clubs with 6,000 members.
Gyms have muscled their way into the public consciousness as people fear they are suffering from living in a polluted and overcrowded city and from being glued to their computers and televisions day after day.
Muscle Indonesia’s chief editor Teddy Tjahjadi says the soaring number of gyms in Jakarta is just the beginning. “Even with new gyms opening up, the number of people going to the gym is still only around 2 to 3 percent of the total market,” he says.
The fitness industry is expanding not only in terms of gyms. Gym wear, food supplements, healthy food restaurants and magazines talking about fitness are now everywhere as the market grows. One key concern is a potential lack of fitness professionals in the city.
