New Life for ParticipACTION

Participaction

While no final decisions have been made as yet, much activity has taken place in Ministry of Health and Ministry of Sport circles during the past several months with a view to reviving ParticipACTION. The news has not been without some expressions of concern from some federal Health Department bureaucrats who feel that funding should be going to non-governmental agencies that are promoting fitness.

The new mission of ParticipACTION would be to act as a national catalyst and communications specialist, fostering partnerships working for a more active and healthy Canada. Specific actions of the “new generation” ParticipACTION will include:

* working cooperatively with and supporting quality private sector fitness industry organizations, workplace wellness programs, and other appropriate commercial initiatives as important contributors to a healthier, more active population

* supporting health/fitness initiatives of the federal and provincial /territorial governments

* supporting various non-profit organizations including support in generating financial assistance

* create a comprehensive website to allow all Canadians “one stop” access to educational information, motivational tools and community-based program opportunities suitable to their needs and interest

Announcements re. ParticipACTION are expected very soon and will be passed on to FitNet readers along with details as to how the new ParticipACTION might partner with the fitness club industry.

I was thrilled to hear that Participaction will be coming back! I look forward to hearing how the government will position it and how it will work with various stakeholders in the Health and Wellness sector, profit and non-profit. Thanks for the update.
